"This Field School planting Jarwo rice, can strengthen farmers' knowledge about how to cultivate rice plants with the Jajar Legowo system, because with the Jarwo system, in addition to increasing plant population, the care and maintenance of rice plants is also cheap," said the Secretary of DP3 (Department of Agriculture). Food and Fisheries) Pariaman City, Ferialdi, closing the Jarwo Rice Field School (SL) program, which was held by Kampung Gadang Padusunan Village, East Pariaman District, Wednesday (5/10).
He added, in the current regional inflation condition, the agricultural sector is one that can be relied on to suppress regional inflation, especially for family food security. By implementing the Jarwo system, of course our rice production will increase, which will lead to an increase in the welfare of farmers, he said.
"We also appreciate the village government of Kampung Gadang, which has allocated 20 percent of its village funds, for the food security program, because we believe, with strong food security, it will help the government in controlling regional inflation," he said.
Ferialdi also explained that for farmers this Field School is not just learning from experience, but a process so that farmers can master new and dynamic knowledge processes, which can be applied in their agricultural land.
"This is very important, because today's era is full of elements of change. It is hoped that the Jarwo Rice Field School process can prepare strong farmers who are able to face current dynamics and future challenges," he said.
Meanwhile, the Village Head of Kampung Gadang Padusunan, Amri Maldi said that his party had budgeted village funds of around Rp. 170 million for the food security program in Kampung Gadang Padusunan Village, one of which is the Jarwo rice field school that they are currently carrying out.
"As for the food security program in Kampung Gadang Padusunan Village, which is a village cash labor intensive of Rp. 30 million, chicken assistance of Rp. 41 million, duck assistance of Rp. 38 million and Jarwo rice planting SL is Rp. 67 million," he explained.
In addition, he also appreciated the participation of the agricultural coordinator and extension worker from DP3 Kota Pariaman, who accompanied him, from planning to implementing food security programs in his village.
"We hope that with the Jarwo rice cultivation SL, farmers in our village can seize the opportunities given as well as possible, because the knowledge given is very useful for farmers," he explained.
Meanwhile, the resource person in Jarwo rice planting SL, Ir. Djoni, who is a former Head of the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation, West Sumatra Province, who is also a practitioner in the field of agriculture, said that many trivial things were ignored by farmers in the field, even though they had very important functions, he said.
He gave an example of burning straw after the farmer had harvested. According to him, this is detrimental for farmers, because if the rice straw is weathered in paddy fields, it will become natural fertilizer, and can increase soil fertility.
"Another example is the use of pesticides when controlling pests, many farmers use pesticides excessively, which will indirectly kill the natural enemies of the pests themselves," he said.
Besides that, he also mentioned the lazy nature of farmers in farming, such as not taking good care of the plants. "We plant the favor first, then they return the favor," he concluded.
This activity is a collaboration between the Village of Kampung Gadang Padusunan, together with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (DP3) of Pariaman City, through the UPT BPPP (Balai Implementing Agricultural Extension). (J)
